A Tribute to
Dr Betty Edwards
Who is Betty Edwards
Dr. Betty Edwards, Professor Emeritus at California State University, Long Beach, was ahead of her time in designing drawing instruction through her groundbreaking insights into perception and neuroscience. Drawing on the research of Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Roger Sperry, Dr. Edwards bridges art and science – investigating the brain's left and right hemisphere, providing insights into how cognitive processes shape perception and creativity.
About Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
What Makes Her Work Unique?
Dr. Betty Edwards’ approach requires a paradigm shift in how we think about drawing and how it is learned. At the core of her method is the understanding that drawing is a learnable skill, not a mysterious talent.
First published in 1979, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain revolutionised art instruction by introducing techniques that engage the brain's right hemisphere. Over the years, she refined her teachings, culminating in the definitive 4th edition of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, published in 2012.
Unlike conventional drawing books that focus on specific subjects—such as trees, animals, or portraits—Dr. Betty Edwards’ book prioritises perceptual skills and explains the cognitive psychology that impacts our seeing.

Addressing Critiques
Betty Edwards’ methods were based on the forefront of neuroscience at the time, grounded in the work of Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist, Roger Sperry’s split-brain theory.
Her book should not be mistaken for a typical "how-to-draw" guide. It goes beyond drawing techniques, offering insights into perception and the preconceived ways our brain interprets what we see.
As she explained, “I tell my students that they will not be doing art but learning perceptual skills.” This demystification of drawing makes it accessible to non-artists, with applications extending beyond the arts into fields like surgery, engineering, and corporate training.
Why it Matters Today
“We don’t teach reading and writing to produce only poets and writers, but rather to improve thinking (…) We should teach drawing to improve thinking.”
- Betty Edwards
In today’s fast-paced, left-brain dominated world, Betty Edwards’ methods offer a vital reminder: creativity begins with seeing differently. Her teachings are not just art lessons, but tools for navigating complexity, fostering innovation, and enhancing the way we engage with the world around us. Her work continues to inspire individuals and organisations seeking fresh perspectives and creative breakthroughs.
Our Journey with Brian Bomeisler
We are proud to be certified by Dr. Betty Edwards and trained by her son, Brian Bomeisler, the Master Instructor who has carried on her legacy since her retirement in 1998.
